Alpamysh-A Response

Readers encountering comments in this Bulletin (16/2, September 1992) on H.B. Paksoy, Alpamysh: Central Asian Identity under Russian Rule (Hartford, Conn., 1989), may at first think another work is being referenced. For example, it is stated in the preface of Alpamysh, "although this work focuses on central Asian-Russian relations, it constitutes a possible model for analysis and investigation of Soviet policy toward other nationalities," and (p.2) "it will not be the purpose of the present work to discuss the broad and complex 'epic' tradition, which has been studied at length, nor to explore the purely literary aspects of dastans." Despite this framing of the work, the reviewer disregards the stated objectives of Alpamysh and writes that the author "appears to be unfamiliar with the theoretical principles of the study of oral epic." The assessment of how the reviewer can pass judgment in this tack is best left to the reader.

In 1925 the Communist Party (CPSU) resolved: "As the class war in general has not ended, neither has it ended on the literary front. In a class society there is not, nor can there be a neutral art."1 This decree, quoted in Alpamysh (p.29), was not confined to the realm of literature but also applied to other aspects of life, including history writing.2 The premier Alpamysh scholar Tura Miraev was aware of the edict, and quoted it in his 1968 work ( Alpamysh, p. 29). The "trial of 'Alpamysh"' by the Soviet authorities reflects the continuation of this policy despite the Soviet "thaw" of the 1950s. It is discussed in Alpamysh (p. 27), quoting the "stenographic record: "Perhaps the most decisive event was the decision of the 20th Party Congress (1956), 'in the name of Soviet science and especially Soviet folklore studies,' to convene an investigative conference on the Alpamysh dastan 'in order to bring to a close these dogmatisms, commentaries and theoretical problems and once and for all to investigate these matters in detail and come to a decision.' Thus a regional conference was held from 20-25 September 1956 in Tashkent, co-sponsored by the Gorkii Institute and the (Tashkent) Pushkin Institute, the purpose of which was 'reconciling the studies (of "Alpamysh"] with Party directives.'" But the reviewer admonishes the author to do work "more useful than repeating Stalinist and Cold War disputes.'' According to this logic, Babi Yar and Katyn Forest should not be mentioned. Stalinism itself need not be reassessed; lessons of the Holocaust and the World Wars should be ignored. The writing of history should perhaps be set aside for "more useful" pursuits. One might observe that it is the historian's task to document and explain events as far as the records allow. Alpamysh presents such documentation and narrative.

In Alpamysh, both "Dede Korkut"3 and "Koroglu"4 are referenced. In addition it is also explained that "Alpamysh"is preserved in the Bamsi Beyrek episode of "Dede Korkut.'' Indeed, these dastans (along with many others) were still considered "dangerous" by the Soviet authorities so that many years after Stalin and his methods were repudiated, neither was widely available in print. In 1988 Professor Zemfira Verdiyeva stated that "Beowulf is always waiting for its purchasers in the shops of England. And in which shops have we seen our own 'Dede Korkut.”  It is known that even the manuscript of the "Koroglu" was concealed from not only the population at large, but also specialized researchers.6 The case of "Chora Batir" provides yet another parallel.7 "Alpamysh" was not immune to similar treatment during 1986.8 Central Asian authors quoted or emulated these dastans outright, while writing their "historical fiction" that appeared in print during the 1970s and 1980s in Central Asia.9  Those works of "historical fiction," containing historically accurate footnotes, were not published to demonstrate submission. The use of these dastans as source material further discloses the "fiction" writers' and their readers' familiarity with the liberation aspects of these dastans. The CPSU also knew this and vehemently attacked all these works and their authors. Because of the importance of "Alpamysh" to the Central Asians, it was central to Soviet policies in Central Asia.

In Alpamysh (Hartford, 1989), there is a specific section entitled
''Collection Efforts" (pp. 122-26). In addition, there are several other portions that document the work of Soviet-era colleagues: inter alia, pp. 34-37, 119, etc. The reviewer claims that the author did not give due credit to Soviet scholars.

Alpamysh contains a select bibliography which lists some of the works specifically devoted to the Alpamysh dastan. The reviewer also overlooks that, and in his haste to criticize, miscounts the number of works contained in the bibliography pertaining to Tura Mirzaev.

On pages 51-52 of Alpamysh, it is noted that "[t)ranslation strives to reflect the style and flavor of the original narration. It isdone primarily for reference to the historical treatment of the topic at hand and not undertaken for purely linguistic analysis.... the translation may, at times, give the impression that the text is composed of incomplete or random sentences. In the original, however, the rhyme scheme holds the verse together." Yet the reviewer, selecting one line out of over forty pages, complains about the elements of the translation, referring t0 "gibberish." Likewise, it is noted (p. 55) chat a "facsimile of the original 1901 text is appended, for those who may wish to further study this rare version. "The reviewer criticizes the placement of the dastan's original text in the organization of the volume, and disparages the physical displacement of the book.

Further, it is observed on page 11of Alpamysh, the "dastan genre has been subjected to a limited type and amount of study by the scholarly world, both Eastern and Western. It is limited in that attention has been focused on the format and translation, as opposed to the reasons why they were composed." The reviewer demonstrates this point by focusing on such items as '"a written as Ar. final 'ha.'"

Zhirmunskii's activities are discussed in Alpamysh, especially as they pertain to the dastan, on pages 53, 119-123, etc. Zhirmunskii, then a specialist in European literature, co-authored a 1947 work with the Uzbek dastan scholar Hadi Zarifov. The latter wrote the bulk of the volume. In 1960 Zhirmunskii essentially reissued the same work minus Zarifov's name. One might place the two works side by side to see the overlap. Subsequent translations and publication of passages from the 1960 work appeared later, again only under Zhirmunskii's name. In the minds of some scholars, Zhirmunskii's repeating his co-author's work without attribution is tantamount to plagiarism. Yet the reviewer is indignant that the author of Alpamysh is "particularly hostile" to Zhirmunskii.

On page 33 of Alpamysh, it is noted that:"Mirzaev, in his 1968work, cites 29 reciters' variants in the Tashkent archives of the Academy of Sciences alone; in his 1969 work, he cites 33 variants of 'Alpamysh' in this same archive." And the reviewer remarks: "The archives of the Folklore division of the Literature Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences contain thirty-odd versions of the Uzbek Alpamysh." Without reference, or due consideration to Tura Mirzaev, or the work he is reviewing, the reviewer presents the information as if it were the fruits of his own labor. One could go on.  Let Alpamysh respond in print.

The dislocated comments on Alpamysh may remind the reader of the criticism mechanism of the Soviets, which is described by the senior scholar Michael Rywkin in "Alexandre Bennigsen in the Eyes of the Soviet Press." Professor Rywkin writes: "Soviet responses are seldom delivered by regular scholars... but rather by specialized 'counterattack writers' whose main occupation consists of rebuffing Western works on Soviet affairs.... [W]hat is even more important, they rarely have read the Western works, subjects of their own rebuffs, in totality. This task is assigned to researchers, who read the work, extract offending passages and transmit them to the 'writers' for action. Since not every Western offender is rebuffed, it is obvious that the 'readers,' before turning the excerpts to the 'writers,' consult a higher level.... The three-level structure of 'instructors,' 'readers,' and 'writers' constitute [sic] the real Soviet rebuff team. The 'writer' whose signature appears at the bottom of the rebuff article has not selected his subject ...nor is he expressing his personal 'indignation' at Western 'lies."'10

In the preface to Alpamysh the hope is stated "that this inquiry will induce others to pursue the questions raised here. Various disciplines and area studies might benefit from this investigation, aside from the obvious Central Asian and Soviet studies. The artificial separation of 'areas' and disciplines, that have not existed during the evolution of the subject matter, cannot yield complete understanding. "Hope is eternal. And this writer is still hoping.

 H. B. Paksoy
ALPAMYSH: CENTRAL ASIAN IDENTITY UNDER RUSSIAN RULE
(Hartford, CT: Association for the Advancement of Central Asian Research)

Paksoy... is absolutely right about the value of the oral, "folk" records like the dastans for preserving ethnic identity... I am also impressed by Paksoy's insistence  (contra a rash of superficial contentions recently) that a fundamental unity of Turks  persists across all artificial Soviet divisions...
John A. Armstrong - Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Through his scholarly commentary on this important epic of the Turkic peoples of  Central Asia, Paksoy conveys an understanding of its political as well as its cultural significance for the relationship between the Turkic peoples and the Russian or Soviet state.
Ralph T. Fisher - University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Epic and politics -- yes, always!
Arthur T. Hatto - University of London

I have only the highest praise for its scholarship. It... [is] an illuminating case study of the importance of the collective memory for the maintenance of ethnic and community identity.
Keith Hitchins - University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

 H. B. Paksoy masterly reconstitutes the shabby saga of Tsarist Soviet efforts first to muzzle this authentic vox populi and then to pervert the message of these texts...
Guy Imart - Universite De Provence, Aix Marseille I

Dr. Paksoy has with the publication of his book rendered a great service... to all those scholars who devote their time to research in Soviet inter-ethic relations....
 Ambassador Gunnar Jarring - Sweden

Dr. Paksoy opened a new stage in Central Asian area studies. The fresh fruits of [his] thorough investigation on Soviet Central Asian literature, history and politics are integrated in this work...
Hisao Komatsu - School of Letters, Tokai University

Dr. Paksoy's absorbing book contains... a concise account of Soviet language  policy...
Geoffrey L. Lewis - Oxford University

This is one of those rare books which offer the Western reader a Central Asian perspective on the Russian conquest of the non-Slavic territories in Asia.
Ewa M. Thompson - Rice University

Dr. Paksoy has done a beautiful job with the dastan Alpamysh. The work is meticulously and exactingly done, and presented clearly.
